Shelboure Hotel

Wink was delighted to provide the lighting design for the refurbishment of the Shelbourne Hotel which won ‘Project of the Year’ at the 2020 Irish Construction Excellence Awards.
The award was for the extensive refurbishment of the famous Dublin hotel carried out by John Paul Construction with London based Interior Designer, Guy Oliver

Wink’s approach to hospitality

We first meet with the design team and clients to determine their goal or intention for the hospitality project.
The identity can be driven by the design which includes the lighting, so in some projects, light levels would be higher such as in the Shelbourne Hotel and in others the lighting would have to be moody like in the Odean or Market Bar.

The big factor in deciding the lighting for a hospitality venue is knowing who are we catering for – what is the age demographic can often be the main driver of which way the lighting will be driven.
In some cases light level can be part of the identity of the space, having it moody and dark creates a specific ambiance and then having it brighter creates a very different impression and experience.
The identity of a project can often be driven by age; an older demographic likes brighter lights while a younger age group tends to  prefer lower moodier lights.

Shelbourne Hotel

Challenge: The reception is sited in the core of the building without any natural daylight.

Solution: we supplemented this by backlighting the sky lights with a dynamic day light which during daylight hours replicates the daylight effect. As dusk falls the colour temperature warms up and reduces in level to give a cozy evening feel.

Shelbourne Hotel Bar

Wink can do partial or full lighting design and supply for a project. With the fit-out of the Shelbourne Hotel, every light fitting that was commissioned. designed and supplied specifically for the project by Wink and its partners, with a saving of up to 30% in the cost of fabrication. This included the reception, the corridors, bars and bedrooms at the iconic hotel.

Cliff House Hotel, Waterford

Challenge

This hidden gem in Waterford was a challenging project, we worked up the light concepts to lighting design and supply with a very creative team of designers.

Solution
The hotel sited on the cliff edge needed some creative solutions to the areas where no natural light existed at all. We use two white light colour temperatures in the lighting design, a cool colour for day light effect and warmer colour for the evening/night time.

Wink was commissioned at the early stages of the design to work with the design team , briefed to come up with a lighting concept to complement the architectural of the space. We worked towards a simple effective, budget driven solution. All of the light fittings bar the glass counter lights were manufactured by ourselves which allowed for colour coordination with the architecture.

The project has managed to create an easy atmosphere for the dinner using a very simple combination of light fittings.

The Market Bar, Dublin 2

Challenge – To create a particular ambiance and experience for the Market Bar located in a 19th century Victorian warehouse, part of the historic George’s Street South City Markets Building

Solution: We used narrow beams located close to the walls to highlight the texture and the form of the original brickwork and arch ways which would have been missed if general pendants were used.
The location of the light source enhances structure, form and texture that can be sometimes missed.

The Lighthouse Cinema

Challenge
Due to the difficulties associated with taking the public down three floors below ground, it was critical that the lighting levels / colours / ambience were considered and designed to achieve an optimum level of comfort whilst complimenting the architectural proposal.

Solution
Wink designed the lighting to support and compliment the overall architectural concept, providing both comfortable and challenging lighting solutions where appropriate.
