Lighting the iconic ‘Rock of Cashel’

Wink had the privilege of undertaking the complete lighting design and product supply for the renowned Rock of Cashel in South Tipperary, one of Ireland’s most iconic historical monuments. The majestic Cathedral, dating back to the 13th Century, exudes its timeless beauty, commanding attention as one approaches Cashel.

Working on such a significant project in collaboration with the Office of Public Works (OPW) was truly inspiring. However, the project presented several challenges that demanded innovative solutions. As a listed building, the Rock of Cashel carried strict restrictions and considerations for the lighting installation. Overcoming these obstacles while achieving the most visually striking treatment of the building was a primary focus.

To achieve the desired effect, a total of 21 x 221-watt RGBW LED addressable light sources were strategically employed to illuminate the exterior of the monument. The selection of these fittings allowed for precise control over the beam angles and lighting placement, ensuring the building’s most dramatic features were accentuated while adhering to the necessary restrictions and guidelines.

Furthermore, the implementation of these modern LED fittings delivered significant energy savings. Compared to the previous lighting scheme, the new fittings contributed to a remarkable 70% reduction in running costs, showcasing the project’s commitment to sustainability and efficiency.

In conclusion, working on the Rock of Cashel project with the OPW was a remarkable experience for Wink. Despite the challenges posed by the building’s listed status, the team’s expertise and the implementation of advanced lighting solutions resulted in a visually stunning illumination that highlights the monument’s architectural splendour while demonstrating a commitment to energy efficiency.

A significant objective of the lighting design for The Rock of Cashel was to provide the flexibility to change the colour scheme for special occasions, such as St. Patrick’s Day. Within the design, it was essential to incorporate two presets for static white light. The availability of warm and cool colour temperatures offered a remarkable contrast and transformed the appearance of the castle when one was compared to the other.

Collaborating with the passionate team from the Office of Public Works (OPW) on this project was a fantastic experience. Their deep appreciation and dedication to preserving the historical significance of the building were evident throughout the process. The OPW team approached the project with utmost care, sensitivity, and attention to detail, ensuring that every aspect of the lighting design aligned with their vision.

The result of our collective efforts was truly satisfying. The lighting design not only met the objective of providing versatile colour options for special occasions but also accentuated the architectural magnificence of The Rock of Cashel. The OPW team expressed their great satisfaction with the outcome, which is a testament to the collaborative spirit and shared commitment to excellence.

It was a privilege to work alongside the OPW team, and their passion for the preservation of this historical monument greatly contributed to the success of the project.
