In collaboration with Kilkenny City Council, Wink undertook a collaborative effort to develop a sustainable urban lighting design scheme for The Lady Desart pedestrian bridge. The primary objective was to provide effective illumination for the bridge while maintaining the aesthetic requirement of having no visible light fittings. In light of this constraint, leveraging the handrail as the primary light source emerged as the most viable and appropriate solution. By ingeniously incorporating lighting within the handrail itself, we were able to meet the project’s objectives, seamlessly blending functionality and design to create a visually appealing and well-illuminated bridge environment.
Extensive market research was conducted to identify the most suitable solution for our project, and after careful evaluation, the LED POD 40 asymmetric from KLIK Systems emerged as the clear frontrunner. This exceptional product features an LED light source ingeniously concealed within the handrail, while all associated cabling is discreetly routed through the handrail itself.
The installation process proved to be remarkably swift and efficient, thanks to the user-friendly “click and play” mechanism. In fact, the entire installation was successfully completed within a single day, showcasing the simplicity and effectiveness of the solution.
To ensure environmental sustainability and minimize disruption to the bat population, our team took proactive measures in designing and installing a specialized controller for the handrail lighting system. This controller enables the dimming of the lighting at specific intervals, thereby conserving energy and extending the lifespan of the LED light fittings.
The implemented controller is programmed to automatically reduce the lighting intensity by 30% at midnight. Additionally, at 2 am, a further reduction of 20% in lighting intensity takes effect. By implementing these dimming measures during hours of lower activity, we not only reduce power consumption but also contribute to the longevity of the LED light fittings. This approach aligns with our commitment to environmental conservation and responsible lighting design practices.
