Wink had the privilege of undertaking the lighting design for the magnificent Round Tower in Clones, located in County Monaghan. This historic tower was transformed into a captivating focal point of the town, accentuating its architectural beauty and ensuring its prominence even during the nighttime.
Situated within a picturesque graveyard, the Round Tower holds significant historical value, dating back to the 10th Century. Its four storeys stand as a testament to the rich heritage and cultural legacy of the region.
When undertaking the lighting design for the Tower in Clones, Wink encountered two significant challenges that required careful consideration and innovative solutions. The first challenge was to ensure that the lighting of the monument did not cause any light spillage onto the nearby homes, considering their close proximity to the structure. This required meticulous planning and precise lighting techniques to control and direct the light effectively.
The second challenge arose from the location of the monument, situated within a graveyard where traditional light fittings could not be placed. The varying distances of 20 meters to 40 meters further complicated the task. Overcoming this hurdle demanded creative thinking and a comprehensive understanding of lighting techniques and equipment suitable for such restrictions.
Approaching the project with utmost determination, Wink developed a well-thought-out lighting proposal that underwent multiple stages, from conception to product decisions and installation coordination. Careful calculations and meticulous project planning were conducted to address the specific challenges posed by the site.
By taking into account the site’s limitations and requirements, Wink was able to design a lighting scheme that successfully mitigated light spillage onto neighbouring homes while still highlighting the Tower’s architectural magnificence. The project’s comprehensive approach ensured that all aspects, from technical considerations to aesthetic objectives, were carefully considered and addressed.
Through careful planning, precise calculations, and expert coordination, Wink successfully overcame the challenges presented by the site, resulting in an outstanding lighting installation for the Tower in Clones. The dedication and attention to detail demonstrated throughout the project ensured that the monument’s beauty was artfully illuminated while respecting the surrounding environment.
The objective of the lighting design for the Round Tower in Clones was to accentuate and showcase the intricate details and character of this historic monument. The aim was to create a visually appealing nighttime aesthetic that would not only delight the town’s inhabitants but also attract tourists to admire its beauty.
To address the challenges posed by the site’s location, extensive research and information gathering were conducted. A lighting calculation was generated using the Dialux software, which allowed for a comprehensive analysis of the best approach to illuminate the tower without causing light spillage onto the nearby houses.
Through careful consideration of the calculation results, it was determined that the most effective method to minimize or eliminate light spillage onto the nearby houses was to utilize an elliptical lens on a narrow beam. This focused and contained beam significantly reduced any potential glare or unwanted light reaching the neighboring residences, ensuring a more harmonious lighting solution.
The outcome of this meticulous planning and calculation was a stunning illumination that enhanced the historic structure and transformed it into a captivating focal point within the town. The carefully selected lighting technique not only highlighted the intricate details of the tower but also mitigated any potential disturbances to the surrounding residents.
The successful lighting design has not only fulfilled its aesthetic objectives but has also become a source of pride and attraction for the town of Clones. The illuminated round tower now stands as a symbol of its rich history, inviting visitors to appreciate its magnificence and contributing to the town’s cultural and touristic appeal.
